What Is a Sitemap and Does My Website Need One?

If you have heard people mention sitemap.xml and wondered whether your business website needs one, this guide explains what it does, what belongs in it and what it cannot do.

Sitemaps in plain English

A sitemap is a structured list of important website URLs.

An XML sitemap gives search engines a clean machine-readable list of pages you want them to know about. It can also include useful information such as when a page was meaningfully updated.

It is not a replacement for normal navigation or internal links. Google says properly linked pages can often be discovered without a sitemap, but a sitemap can still improve discovery and crawling—especially as a site grows.

What does a sitemap contain?

Usually the canonical URLs of public pages you want search engines to discover and consider for indexing.

Where does it live?

A common location is /sitemap.xml at the root of the website, although other valid locations and sitemap formats exist.

Who reads it?

Search-engine crawlers can use the sitemap as another discovery route alongside links they find while crawling the website.

Do I actually need one?

Most business websites benefit from having a clean sitemap.

A tiny site with excellent internal linking may still be discovered without one. In practice, a sitemap is a low-friction way to show Google and Bing which public URLs matter and to make future growth easier to manage.

A sitemap is especially useful when...

  • The website is new and has few external links.
  • The site has many pages or is growing steadily.
  • Some important pages are several clicks away from the homepage.
  • Content is updated and you want a clear discovery route for changed URLs.
  • You want to monitor sitemap processing in Search Console or Bing Webmaster Tools.

What should not be stuffed into it?

  • Duplicate URLs that point to the same canonical page.
  • Temporary utility pages that are intentionally noindexed.
  • Broken URLs or redirects used only as old routes.
  • Every parameter or filtered URL a website can generate.
  • Pages you do not actually want considered for search.
How do I submit a sitemap?

Use the search engines' own webmaster tools.

For Google, add the site to Google Search Console and submit the sitemap in the Sitemaps report. For Bing, add or import the site into Bing Webmaster Tools and submit the same sitemap there.

A sitemap can help discovery, but Google explicitly says it does not guarantee that every URL in the file will be crawled or indexed.

Important distinction

Submitted means the search engine has been told where the sitemap is. Discovered means it knows a URL exists. Indexed means the page has been added to the search index. Those are different stages.

How Vantora used its sitemap in a live setup.

On 17 August 2026, Vantora Web Studio completed its own search-visibility setup and recorded a useful technical snapshot: the XML sitemap had been submitted to Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, 31 sitemap URLs were submitted through IndexNow, Bing reported the homepage as successfully indexed with no SEO/GEO issues, and a Bing Site Scan crawled 37 pages with 0 errors and 0 warnings.

Those results confirm that the technical discovery and crawl foundations were working at that point. They do not guarantee a search position, traffic level or future ranking.

Google Search Console

Vantora submitted its XML sitemap so Google had a direct list of the site's indexable pages alongside normal internal-link discovery.

Bing Webmaster Tools

The same sitemap was submitted to Bing. Bing accepted it for processing, while IndexNow was used separately to notify participating search engines of the current URLs.
